Packed Fulton County meeting yields calls for moratorium, commission refers zoning change back to area plan
Summary
Hundreds of residents voiced concerns Jan. 20 about proposed zoning changes that would allow large data centers in agricultural areas; commissioners moved to send the amendment back to the area plan commission for further public hearings and study.
Fulton County commissioners heard hours of public comment on Jan. 20 as residents urged a halt to zoning changes that would allow large data centers in agricultural areas around Akron. Commissioners said no formal application has been filed with the county but accepted widespread calls for additional study and moved to refer the amendment back to the area plan commission for review and public hearing.
The meeting drew repeated appeals from homeowners, farmers and business owners worried that a large data center could lower property values, deplete private wells and increase noise and generator emissions. "We the county and the community deserve guarantees," James Zimmerman told the board, asking for protections that would keep property values, water supplies and electricity bills from being harmed by a future project.
