Constable asks board to raise deputy pay to stem turnover and fund 20th precinct

Wallace asked the board to increase the deputy salary range to approximate MCAO investigator pay, estimating a recurring cost increase of $160,441 (including employer rate enhancements) for nine deputies, and sought $54,900 one‑time plus $153,424 recurring to fund a statutorily required 20th constable precinct (vehicle, taser, radio and recurring salary/benefits). He noted deputy constables are AZPOST certified and that many deputies are retired PSPRS members now employed under ASRS.
Supervisors asked about pension treatment for deputies who retired from PSPRS and were rehired; Wallace said retired deputies draw PSPRS and the rehired position uses ASRS contributions but that many deputies have some pension income. Board members discussed working conditions, recruitment timelines and comparative pay at municipal agencies. No vote was taken; presenters said they had discussed the proposal with budget staff.
