Ad hoc supervision committee presents progress on supervision standards; public commenters urge consumer perspective

Board member Mala (committee chair) reported May 3 that the ad hoc supervision-standards committee has convened a diverse group of academic and practitioner representatives who have provided extensive input. The committee has exhausted much of its debate on supervision ratios and other technical language and plans more meetings over the summer to consolidate edits into a package for the full board.
Ada Boone Hurrell and Penny Stack, two public commenters, expressed appreciation for the committee’s diligence and stressed that consumer protection and access must remain the guiding principles. Hurrell recommended greater inclusivity for practitioner types serving as educators and suggested duplicating a licensure requirement so occupational therapy assistants (OTAs) who teach in OTA or OT programs must also maintain a current active license; staff accepted the suggestion for insertion.
Committee members said they will continue outreach to stakeholders, invite relevant accreditation representatives to future ad hoc meetings, and return to the board with consolidated recommendations.
