OT board amends practice-act language on meeting locations and tables petition-procedure revision

The California Board of Occupational Therapy on May 3 voted to revise statutory meeting-location language in Business and Professions Code section 2570.19, replacing a requirement to hold annual meetings in specific cities with a template used in other practice acts that requires at least three meetings per calendar year and at least one meeting held in Northern California and one in Southern California.
Board members debated alternatives — deleting city names, changing 'cities' to 'counties' or striking the word 'annually' — before agreeing to adopt the Northern/Southern California template used by other health-related boards. The motion passed on a roll-call vote. The board also voted separately to change a sunset date in section K of 2570.19 from 2027 to 2028 to align with the legislative calendar; that motion also passed.
Separately, staff proposed modifying petition and hearing provisions in BPC 2570.32 to permit written argument consistent with the Administrative Procedure Act rather than the practice act’s current, more restrictive oral-hearing requirement. Board counsel explained the proposed change would reduce cost and increase flexibility by allowing written petitions and responses with board review in closed session. Given time constraints and member travel plans, the board tabled detailed consideration of 2570.32 for a later meeting.
