Portage board accepts $1.575 million Title I award, plus PLTW grants and field trips

The Title I award of $1,575,366.45 was presented as supporting 41 certified and non-certified staff who will provide services to at-risk students; the district said $80,438.98 of the award will be shared with two nonpublic schools as required equitable services under Title I. Trustees described the funds as focused on children with the highest needs while noting broader benefits to all students.
Separately, the board accepted a $15,000 PLTW Biomedical grant for Portage High School to buy microscopes and an incubator to expand course sections, and a $15,000 PLTW Gateway grant for Bigley Middle School to expand automation and robotics curriculum. Trustees thanked district staff—"Mrs. Williams" was singled out—for securing grant dollars.
The board also approved a retroactive overnight field trip for Portage High wrestling teams (IHSWCA and IHSAA tournaments) and an overnight trip for the Portage High VEX robotics team to Green Bay on Jan. 30, 2025. The board approved continuation of the Greater Portage Chamber of Commerce membership for 2025 at an annual cost of $350 and discussed inviting the chamber’s new executive director, Jerry Zarnicki, to brief the board.
All grant awards, memberships and field-trip approvals were approved by motion and roll call votes with no recorded negative votes.
