Several members of the public told the Urbana City Council they were alarmed and angered by the Urbana Police Department’s response to a recent attempted abduction of an 11‑year‑old and called for investigation and accountability.
Multiple anonymous speakers and residents submitted written and spoken input alleging front‑desk personnel denied services, that initial calls were not properly documented or dispatched, and that a subsequent Facebook post by a police officer publicly blamed and shamed the victim’s family. One anonymous commenter wrote that “They definitely failed that little girl and her family,” and urged the council to insist on answers and discipline: “An apology won’t do. They need to be held accountable.”
Resident callers asked whether there is a written policy for front‑desk intake, how calls and names are documented, who oversees front‑desk staff, what disciplinary steps will be taken if policies were violated, and whether the chief should resign. Commenters also raised concerns that a Facebook post by a UPD account discouraged witnesses from coming forward and asked whether any officers violated department policy.
Council members acknowledged the public’s concern and said the city was pursuing an internal investigation. Mayor Diane Wolfe Marlin said Chief Boone advised that the investigation would be completed by the end of the week and that the council would have information to share at the next council meeting. Council members urged discipline, additional front‑desk training and policy changes where appropriate, and noted some personnel matters may need to be addressed in closed session.
Council also flagged resources for residents: a hotline number (217‑384‑4444) for support services was mentioned during council discussion.
Next steps: Council expects the police investigation to be completed within the week and for information to be shared at the council’s next meeting. Council members said they want public acknowledgement of any actions taken and, where appropriate, disciplinary steps, policy changes and training for front‑desk staff.
