Urbana special census underway; city urges residents in targeted blocks to respond

Will Kolchowski told council the special census is underway: the first round of mailings has gone to residents in the special census area and further rounds will follow in September. Residents who do not self-respond will be visited by field representatives during follow-up efforts.
Kolchowski described a diversified outreach plan — yard signs, radio, paid Facebook advertisements and outreach to the university and partners — and asked council and community partners to help share materials. Staff said a flyer with a QR code and a map will be distributed later in the week. The official census date is Oct. 15 and staff hopes the effort will conclude by November.
Councilors asked about how many field representatives are hired; Kolchowski said the Census Bureau has hired field representatives but he did not have an exact number on the record and noted the bureau generally prefers to continue recruiting because not all recruits last through the project. Staff also noted temporary part-time field representative positions are available.
