A committee meeting of the Urbana City Council heard a written complaint on Monday alleging the Urbana Police Department failed to properly investigate a reported attempted abduction of a child.
Council Member Mary Alice read an email from resident Ron Cussler that said the suspect “waived his Miranda rights to admit guilt” and pointed to a sequence of failures: delayed citizen complaint handling, breakdowns in internal error checking and an inappropriate police social media response that “projected blame onto the victim's family and their allies.” The email asked the council to “demand answers and accountability” and to ensure the error “won't happen again.”
Mayor Marlon told the committee that the council had been briefed on the timeline and that the Urbana Police Department will present a public report at next week’s council meeting. Council Member Grace and others also referenced the closed-session briefing and said they heard about training updates, policy work and other departmental actions but that more details would be provided publicly when the UPD releases its report.
The committee did not take policy action on the allegation at the meeting; the mayor’s announcement sets a procedural next step: a public UPD report at the upcoming council meeting. The council encouraged residents to attend that session for the fuller explanation the administration has promised.
