Fifth grader asks board to allow flame‑resistant classroom light covers, cites California fire code

During public comment, fifth grader Fiona Victor of Frank Fussell Elementary urged the Cypress School District board to reconsider a decision restricting classroom decorative light covers.
"California allows the decorative light covers as long as they... are treated for the flame resistance," Fiona said, referencing the California Fire Code and NFPA 701. She said she spoke with an Orange County Fire Authority representative who indicated that flame-resistant decorative materials can be permitted.
Board members asked staff to follow up and provide a comparison between the Orange County Fire Authority guidance and international code references previously discussed, and requested the matter be included in the Friday report for board review.
The board directed staff to respond to the speaker and to include comparative code language and any liabilities or facility considerations in the upcoming report.
