Cypress reports small CAASPP gains as district enrollment and student needs shift

At the Nov. 13 meeting, Dr. Gibbs presented the Cypress School District’s 2025 CAASPP results and described district efforts to support literacy and math growth across grades.
"68.7 percent of our students met or exceeded standard," Dr. Gibbs said, adding that the district’s overall ELA performance places Cypress third among elementary districts in Orange County and that several student subgroups — including English learners, socioeconomically disadvantaged students, homeless students and students with disabilities — outperformed county and state subgroup averages.
Dr. Gibbs told the board district enrollment has declined by about 800 students over roughly a decade, and noted the share of students with disabilities rose from 8% to about 16% while socioeconomically disadvantaged students grew from 34% to 46%. He described targeted professional development, centralized PD by instructional learning coaches and tiered interventions (Tier 2/3) as contributors to incremental gains, and previewed planned math material pilots.
Trustees asked for further disaggregated data (for example, fifth-grade science and multi-year class-level trends) and praised the report’s combination of "the science of reading" and classroom practice. No policy action was taken; staff will supply additional cohort and subject-specific trend data in future reports.
