Morrow County approves AWOS activation and $59,650 electrical relocation at county airport

The Morrow County Board of Commissioners voted to approve final payments and contracts this afternoon that the county said will put new weather reporting equipment into regular service and relocate electrical infrastructure at the Morrow County Airport.
The board approved a final pay application for Howard Electric Company’s installation of an Automated Weather Observing System (AWOS), which county airport staff reported is online and certified. An airport representative said the system is designed primarily for aviation users, reports temperature in degrees Celsius and can be accessed by phone at 419-947-1039 for automated weather reports. “It is up and running and ... we’re certified,” the airport representative said.
Commissioners also approved a $59,650 contract with Jay Grama Electric Incorporated to relocate the Wincomb electrical installation at the airport. County staff described the work as moving equipment currently near hangars and runway approaches to a compliant location; the board recorded roll-call approvals from Commissioners Mason, Abraham and Siegfried.
Airport staff told the board the installation of fuel tanks — previously approved earlier in the year — remains contingent on manufacturer production schedules. Staff said tanks and related fueling capability are expected to begin arriving and become operational around September or October if production proceeds on schedule.
The board authorized transfers into the airport general fund to cover recent airport expenditures and approved the related pay application. County officials said contractors coordinated closely to complete the AWOS startup after on-site issues delayed certification.
The board’s actions will allow pilots and local users to access automated weather information from the AWOS and proceed with planned site relocation work this year. No public opposition was recorded during the airport items; the projects were advanced by motions and approved by unanimous roll-call votes.
