Deerfield 109 board approves March 3, 2025 school day to make up Aug. 28 emergency closure

The Deerfield Public Schools District 109 Board of Education voted Wednesday to make March 3, 2025, a day of student attendance to replace an emergency closure on Aug. 28, 2024.
The administration described the change during a public hearing, noting the emergency closures on Aug. 28 were caused by storms and widespread power loss to district buildings. "If a day of attendance is held on a commemorative holiday, Illinois school code states that the person or persons honored by the holiday are recognized through instructional activities conducted on that day," the administration said during the hearing.
No members of the public spoke during the required three solicitations for comment. The board then approved the item in roll-call votes. For the motion to approve a day of attendance on 03/03/2025, the roll call recorded Miss Joyce, Mr. Kuo, Mr. Morrison, Miss Bonner, Doctor Dornfeld, Miss Jackamew and President Montgomery voting "Aye." The subsequent motion to amend the 2024–25 public school calendar to reflect the attendance day passed on a roll call that recorded the same "Aye" votes.
Superintendent Mike Simic said reminders about the calendar change would be shared through newsletters and district communications. He also noted that if instructional time is held on a commemorative holiday, the district will use the day to teach about Casimir Pulaski as required by state code.
The calendar amendment takes effect for students if the board's approvals remain in place and the district carries out its planned communications and instructional activities.
