County honors facilities worker for lifesaving CPR; Medical Reserve Corps highlights community trainings

"We are proud to work alongside Sean, and his actions reflect great credit upon himself, his family, and Barnstable County," a county official read as the board presented the citation signed by commissioners Ronald Bergstrom, Sheila Alliance, and Mark Forrest dated July 2024. Sean received thanks from the board and several commissioners, who noted the importance of training and of community readiness to perform immediate lifesaving actions.
Diana Garmon, director of the Cape Cod Medical Reserve Corps, and volunteer coordinator Mary Pat Kane described the corps’ volunteer training programs, which include full CPR classes, hands‑only CPR demonstrations for health fairs, AED training, and stop‑the‑bleed instruction. Garmon urged wider community participation in short, accessible trainings and explained that lay bystanders often make the difference in the first crucial minutes before first responders arrive.
Commissioners praised the volunteers’ work and discussed possible ways to widen training access through schools, camps, councils on aging and community groups. No formal policy or funding action was taken at the meeting beyond the citation.
