Northfield task force outlines March 4 “Cabin Fever” lantern parade and free workshops

Caitlin Keating, representing the Accessibility, Walkability and Pedestrian Safety Task Force, told the Select Board that organizers secured an AARP winter placemaking grant to host a Cabin Fever block party on Wednesday, March 4, intended to bring people outdoors during winter and to be universally accessible.
Keating said the event will be based at Norwich University's fields and adjacent armory space and will end with a lantern parade around the field. "This event is specifically for Vermonters who don't usually get outside or cannot get outside in the wintertime," Keating said, adding that organizers hope to provide transportation for residents who lack it. She described free lantern-making workshops at Northfield Middle High School on Saturday, Feb. 7, and Sunday, Feb. 8, and said materials are supplied but registration is required because supplies are limited.
The task force named local partners and volunteers helping with logistics and outreach: Tom Davis (economic development director) assisted with the AARP application; Carolyn Stevens is the volunteer contact for registration; artists MK Monley and Jason Endres are assisting with lantern design and the parade aesthetic; Fred Young of the Northfield News helped with publicity; and Liz Kennedy of Kennedy's Flowers is a co-sponsor and volunteer lead. Keating asked residents to look for printed posters with a QR code for workshop registration and to watch the newspaper for more details.
Keating also addressed accessibility and safety features planned for the event, noting site choice and workshop formats were selected to be family-friendly and usable by people with mobility limitations. Organizers expect LED-lit lanterns in the parade and will follow safety guidance for any outdoor fire features. Keating invited questions and thanked Norwich University, local businesses and volunteer artists for support.
