Waukegan board rejects sealed bids for 742 Greenwood Avenue, directs broker search

The Waukegan Community Unit School District 60 Board of Education voted to reject two sealed bids for the district‑owned property at 742 Greenwood Avenue and directed the administration to engage a licensed real estate broker to market and sell the site.

During public comment, Germaine Castellanos of the Boys & Girls Club asked the board to weigh community benefit in selecting a buyer and described a plan to use the building for before‑ and after‑school care and enrichment for neighborhood students. The superintendent and administration then presented a resolution that listed two sealed bids received Jan. 16, 2026: a $350,000 offer from the Boys & Girls Club of Lake County and a $410,000 offer submitted on behalf of the owners of Tuite's Bakery.

The resolution, read into the record, said the board had determined neither bid was acceptable. It directed the administration to retain a licensed real estate broker to sell the property for a commission not to exceed 7 percent and to complete the broker engagement within 120 days. The motion to adopt the resolution was made by Ms. Fabian, seconded by Ms. Ramirez, and carried by roll call.

The resolution also authorizes the board president, board secretary, superintendent and attorneys to sign documents and take necessary actions to effect the sale. The board noted a typographical error in the resolution's section numbering during discussion but treated that as clerical.

No buyer was selected at the meeting and no dollar figure was set; the board's action was to reject the two sealed bids and direct a broker search as the next step.
