Easton committee advances naming policy to second read after broad policy housekeeping

The Easton School Committee spent most of its Jan. 22 meeting conducting first reads of dozens of policy revisions and housekeeping edits, and set the revised naming policy for a second read at the committee’s next meeting.
Chair opened the hybrid session at 5:36 p.m. and said the items under review were all “first reads,” with legal references added and duplicated statutory language removed. Director DiNapoli led a substantive review of the D-section policies, which included DDA (criminal background checks); Director Spagna reviewed purchasing and payment procedures and DKC expense reimbursements. Several members noted minor formatting and numbering errors that staff will correct before a second read.
On the naming policy (FFA), the committee reported the policy was reorganized and now requires a financial contribution as part of the criteria for naming school facilities. The chair said the committee reorganized the policy and clarified committee composition and process; because of those changes the naming policy will be returned for a second read next week so the naming subcommittee can begin its work.
Committee members also discussed a number of G‑series items that staff and counsel recommended deleting from the policy manual because they are covered by law or collective bargaining. The chair said deleted policies will be retained in a shared drive folder with documented reasons for deletion so the committee retains historical context.
There were no substantive votes on any of these policy items at the Jan. 22 meeting; the items were recorded as first reads. The committee took a short recess at 5:55 p.m. and reconvened later that evening for a training presentation.
