Committee debates safety tools, flex‑post durability and trail enforcement

Committee members used the other‑business portion of the meeting to press staff on maintenance, signage and enforcement for safety interventions already in the pipeline.

Abby Hildebrandt and others raised recurring damage to flex/delineator posts on corridors such as Applebee and Front; staff said a new, more durable post model is being evaluated and that the city has a mobility budget to replace lanes and stripe bike facilities. Terry Golligan said crews had reinstalled about 20 of the older posts but they were repeatedly destroyed and that the newer design appears more resilient.

On enforcement and misuse of trails, several members described an uptick in motorized e‑motorcycles, wheelies and other unsafe behaviors on trails. Captain Michelle Miller of the Fayetteville Police Department noted the department has a two‑officer trail unit and said response capacity is limited: “We have a trail unit that’s 2 officers,” she said, adding officers will respond to calls but that the devices are often gone by the time patrol arrives. The police asked the group for ideas beyond patrols, and members suggested targeted social media outreach, improved signage, and community reporting as partial remedies.

The committee also discussed the Wynwood/Mission area, where members recommended short sidewalk infill projects, curb ramps and wayfinding signs to channel users toward safer crossings rather than risky mid‑block movement. Staff said a sidewalk project between Lindsay and Wynwood is planned and that RRFBs (rectangular rapid flashing beacons) are included in Mission Trail design.

The meeting closed with an announcement seeking volunteers for the Congress for New Urbanism conference and no formal committee votes on the safety proposals.
