Commissioners highlight 4-week manufacturing exposure program for high-school seniors

County officials described plans to restart a short, school-focused manufacturing exposure program aimed at high-school seniors who are not yet committed to college, military service or other post‑secondary plans.

An unnamed commissioner said the county workforce coordinator is bringing the program back for a second year. "It's a 4 week program that meets just on Wednesdays," the speaker said, adding that the curriculum introduces students to modern manufacturing, communication skills and employer tours that can lead to placements.

The speaker said three of six county high schools are participating so far and that staff are working with guidance counselors to recruit students who may benefit from hands-on exposure and direct partnerships with local manufacturers. The board heard that the program is intended to reduce the number of students who might otherwise "fall in the cracks" after graduation.

Funding details were not provided at the meeting; a commissioner said they had spoken with a staff member named Candace about returning program funds and would follow up. The board did not take a formal vote on the program at the session and asked staff to provide more information as it becomes available.
