Commission updates transportation priority list, agrees to support FHWA rural/tribal pilot application

Planning staff reviewed the commission’s existing priority letter of 10 transportation projects and described several updates and funding opportunities. Items on the list include the Route 219 north extension, safety improvements near Traders Landing, Bransfield sidewalk extension, Oakland bypass, accessibility and trail improvements, Maryland 135 upgrades, Grantsville sidewalk extensions, and Bradford Lake accessible fishing path.
Staff said the county has been in early conversations with transit leadership about adding fixed-route service in higher-density areas of Oakland (near Walmart, the hospital and health department) and noted procurement needs for vehicles and facility improvements. Staff also said an Oakland Herring Commander Trail public meeting is planned for April 1 to present a proposed alignment and next steps.
The planning department indicated intent to apply for the Federal Highway Administration’s new pilot Rural and Tribal Assistance Program to fund design, outreach, environmental work and construction documents (but not construction). Staff asked the commission for a letter of support to strengthen the application; commissioners agreed and staff said they would provide a template to submit with the application.
No formal vote was required on project prioritization; staff said they will return with a revised priority letter when ready.
