Trey Hall, the Iowa City Police Department’s community outreach officer, told the Human Rights Commission about recent outreach events and partnerships and answered commissioners’ questions about local resources for residents facing food insecurity and heating problems.
Hall described recent activities including Brew with the Crew at Willow Creek Park, a booth at African Fest on the Ped Mall, a preschool visit, a trunk-or-treat event in partnership with the Salvation Army and Pizza Ranch that Hall estimated served "probably 150 to 200 kids," and a winter clothing drive that ran several days and served community members from across Johnson County.
When commissioners asked about SNAP and other supports amid benefit changes, Hall suggested local partners and events — including a pack-the-truck effort by a community group, senior-center food drives on Mondays, and housing inspection as a route to resolve landlord noncompliance on heating and water. He offered to follow up with commissioners to share resource contacts for broader community distribution.
Commissioners thanked Hall and suggested continuing partnerships between the police department and community groups for outreach and training. No formal action followed the report.
