Library director reports high spring turnout, new teen science cafe and concerns over federal funding

Heather, the library director, gave the director's report and highlighted spring programming successes and emerging funding concerns.

"We ... had spring break. Our big event was Kathy's Critters" she said, reporting attendance of "486 people, almost 500 people at 1 event." Heather described new offerings including exploratory take‑home kits for children (about 15 available now), gaming equipment and tournaments for teens, a bilingual story time that will be scheduled regularly after elections, and a new teen‑led science cafe led by Taylor (team librarian) and Rachel (STEM library associate).

Heather and other trustees also noted federal funding pressures. A trustee pointed to reduced budgets at the Institute of Museum and Library Services and said some libraries are discontinuing the Hoopla digital service because of per‑checkout costs. Heather said the board is watching funding changes closely; no immediate cuts or program cancellations were authorized at the meeting.

Operational notes included library closures for Good Friday and Easter (two days) and election logistics: Heather said materials would remain available through May 4 and that election day was referred to as the third (as discussed), and communications staff (Stacy in communications) approved posting live 'stories' from events to show attendees what is happening.

The board did not vote on funding changes during this meeting; the director’s report was informational and trustees discussed next steps for outreach and program support.
