Ocean Shores airport committee credits successful Appreciation Day, plans safety and signage fixes

Scott, the airport liaison, said he recorded numerous photos and videos taken by Daryl Prowse of North Beach Independent Media and offered to provide a thumb drive so the city can post selected media on the city website. "They're not because they're too big," Scott said of the files and proposed putting them in an annual Airport Appreciation Day folder for public access.
Members prioritized safety and visitor experience as the top lessons learned. The committee agreed to add a dedicated advertising row to the event action‑item list so organizers can track where promotions are posted. Chair (unnamed) said the published safety plan "worked out pretty well" and proposed preserving it for future events.
Safety changes the committee approved or recommended include deploying bee (yellow‑jacket) traps one week before the event, adding simple pitot‑tube flags or ties to warn non‑aviation visitors about exposed pitot tubes, and moving volunteer car parking east of the hangars to free up three to four aircraft parking spots. Jerry Davis raised the pitot‑tube concern, saying many visitors "aren't really aviation people" and might not see exposed tubes; members agreed to offer small flagged covers for pilots to place on their pitot tubes on arrival.
On event timing and signage, members discussed keeping the Appreciation Day on the Saturday before Labor Day weekend and improving directional and promotional signs. The committee concluded signs should be larger, more colorful and treated as an action item ahead of next year’s event rather than last‑minute work.
The committee did not take votes on policy changes but assigned follow‑up tasks, including finalizing the advertising/action list and arranging for public‑works assistance to place bee traps ahead of the next Appreciation Day. The next meeting will review the action list and finalize materials for posting and signage.
