The Ocean Shores Police Department told the Public Safety Committee on Jan. 20 that it has submitted two conditional offers of employment to candidates who interviewed last week and has scheduled deputy chief interviews for Friday.
Police department staff said the conditional offers will begin background checks and move the candidates through the remaining hiring steps. The presenter said the department is hopeful the hires will 'get the ball rolling' for background processing and final onboarding.
Committee members asked whether the two hires would bring the department to full staffing. Police staff said that if the candidates successfully complete conditions, the department would be at full staffing and that the city would then request an additional position because another viable candidate remains on the eligibility list.
The presenter also reported a certification timing change: an equivalency training previously scheduled for July 25–26 was rescheduled to March 2–12, and the presenter expects to complete the training then.
Committee members described recruitment as difficult and welcomed the progress. No formal action or vote was taken on staffing at the meeting; next steps identified were completing background checks and returning to council with any formal position requests.
