A large segment of public comment at the Huntington Beach council meeting focused on adherence to legislative policy resolution 63-20 and on urging the council to appoint Councilmember Chad Williams as mayor pro tem. Numerous speakers cited Williams’s vote total and military service and asked the council to "follow the rules" and "do the right thing." The clerk reported about 60 speakers signed up for public comment, and the council limited speaking time because of the high turnout.
Separately, a representative of the Friends of the Library said the nonprofit wishes to donate $825,000 to the library with three conditions: the city must not impose laws that violate First Amendment protections regarding library content; the Friends must be permitted to continue book sales and operate a gift shop in library facilities; and the organization must retain meeting-room access. The speaker said the group had submitted a grant proposal and sought a city response.
Other public commenters raised neighborhood safety concerns, reporting local burglaries and requesting police follow-up; city staff invited those residents to submit blue cards so staff could follow up.
The council did not take an immediate vote on the Friends’ proposed donation during the meeting; staff follow-up was requested.
