Amanda McIntosh, suicide prevention liaison for 4 Corners Community Behavioral Health, addressed the Orangeville City Council on Aug. 14 and asked the council to proclaim September 2025 as Suicide Prevention Month.
McIntosh described her personal connection to suicide-loss survivorship and the coalition work she coordinates in the region. She said local and state data show statistically higher suicide rates in some counties and that designating a month in the city’s minutes and public releases helps reduce stigma by generating conversation and drawing attention to resources. "By doing that and putting it in the minutes and putting it in the newspaper articles... it's generating conversation and breaking down stigma," McIntosh said.
Councilmembers thanked McIntosh for her work and voices of support were recorded. Councilmember Kevin moved to adopt the proclamation; a second was offered and the motion passed unanimously.
The council asked staff to file the proclamation in the minutes and to make local resource information available to residents. The adoption is procedural: the proclamation puts the city on record in support of awareness and resource-sharing but does not by itself create new programs or budget allocations.
