Torrance City Council agrees to reconsider relocation of Armed Forces Day parade

Torrance City Council members at a regular meeting granted unanimous concurrence to reconsider the council’s Dec. 2 decision to relocate the city’s Armed Forces Day parade and directed staff to return the item to the Dec. 16 agenda for further discussion.

The request was made by Councilwoman Kalani, who told colleagues she supported the concept of transitioning the parade to the airport as a new venue but acknowledged “the community’s strong desire to celebrate” in its prior location and the “significant community feedback” received since the Dec. 2 vote. “I’m requesting concurrence to reconsider the council’s 12/02/2025 decision regarding the relocation of the Armed Forces Day parade,” Kalani said, asking staff to bring the item back on “12/16/2025 for reconsideration.”

Mayor Chen responded after the request and recorded the concurrence as unanimous, saying, “That’s a 7 0. You have concurrence.” The council did not hold a debate or record a formal roll-call vote beyond the concurrence announced on the dais; the council’s action directs staff to re-agendize the relocation item for Dec. 16.

Earlier in the meeting the council recessed into a closed session to discuss matters listed under state law authorizing closed sessions for matters including anticipated litigation and labor/negotiations; the presiding official cited the relevant Government Code sections when announcing the closed session. City Manager John reported after the session that there were no reportable actions.

The meeting ended with a motion to adjourn to Tuesday, Dec. 16, 2025; the presiding official announced the motion carried and noted that council members Sheikh, Kaji and Gerson were absent at the time of adjournment.

What’s next: The relocation of the Armed Forces Day parade will return to the Torrance City Council agenda on Dec. 16, 2025 for additional discussion and any possible formal action.
