Local farmers showcase innovation, multigenerational operations in 'Face of Farming' segment

Kelsey Kadel, business specialist for agriculture at the Department of Business and Economic Development, introduced a Face of Farming segment highlighting long-running family farms and new technologies.
Laurie Walt of Walt’s Family Farm described the farm’s history in the Tewesville area and a seasonal farm store that supplements farm income and engages the community. “We sell eggs; we raise beef, pork and lamb,” Walt said, explaining how the farm’s offerings have evolved to support the family.
Jenny Malott, manager of Misty Meadow Farm LLC, explained how robotic milking technology allowed her family to maintain a dairy operation of about 800 acres while increasing flexibility: “The robots make it possible for me to do this by myself … It gives you more possibilities as far as having a life outside of farming.” She described how the robots collect health data and support daily herd management.
Commissioners praised both families and asked staff to include more location details when the videos are posted, so residents can better identify and support local farms.
The segment was presented as part of the county’s agricultural outreach and economic-development efforts.
