DPA notifies commission of upcoming use-of-force audit, reports caseload and new interns

Paul Henderson, executive director of the Department of Police Accountability, briefed the commission on Feb. 19 about ongoing and upcoming DPA work. Henderson said the agency's audit director has notified stakeholders and the chief that a mandated use-of-force audit will take place; the audit process will include outreach to stakeholders and the commission.
Henderson said the investigations unit opened 18 new cases and closed 15 since the previous commission meeting. He corrected the top allegation classification in recent notifications to "conduct unbecoming" rather than "neglect of duty." Henderson reported 19 investigations have been open more than 270 days (16 of those tolled), four cases are pending resolution with the commission, and 103 cases are pending with the chief's office.
Henderson also announced that three interns have joined DPA for the spring semester and that the office is accepting applications for its award-winning summer internship program. Henderson said he would reserve additional comments for agenda items that directly relate to DPA's work later in the meeting.
