Nueces County accepts Constable Bobby Sherwood’s resignation and appoints deputy Christopher Stimpson

The Nueces County Commissioners Court on a February morning accepted the resignation of Constable Robert “Bobby” Sherwood and appointed deputy Christopher Stimpson to fill Precinct 4 for the remainder of the term.
Sherwood was honored with a watch and remarks recognizing his 44 years of service before the court moved to accept his resignation by motion and unanimous vote. The court then considered the recommendation of Constable Sherwood to appoint his deputy, Christopher Stimpson, under Texas Local Government Code §87.041.
Supporters cited Stimpson’s on-the-job experience. At the meeting, one commissioner said the young deputy “has been doing the job and not getting the pay, not getting the title,” and that in this circumstance a local appointment was appropriate. Another commissioner said he preferred a formal, open process for filling elected vacancies and wanted clarity that the commission would follow a consistent standard in future vacancies.
The court voted 4–1 to appoint Stimpson to finish the term. After the vote Stimpson thanked the court and Sherwood for mentorship, saying he intended to “do everything in my power to earn your vote of confidence.”
The appointment is effective upon completion of bond and other administrative requirements; commissioners noted the effective date would be set when the bond is in place. The court also stressed a desire to be transparent about process going forward.
No additional formal challenges to the appointment were recorded. The court's action immediately followed acceptance of Sherwood’s resignation and was taken as a separate motion from the earlier recognition of his long service.
