Commission extends due diligence on proposed John Lewis property purchase to May
Summary
After receiving the seller’s revised purchase agreement, the commission authorized the county attorney to negotiate timeline and title‑company changes and moved the due‑diligence deadline into May so the county can obtain surveys and use a local title company if appropriate.

Carter County commissioners on Jan. 25 authorized the county attorney to negotiate revisions to a proposed purchase and sale agreement for the John Lewis property and extended the buyer’s due‑diligence period into May.
County Attorney (identified in the meeting) told commissioners the seller returned a version of the agreement that included additional procedural deadlines and required use of a title company in Phoenix, Arizona. The attorney said those logistics could make compliance difficult for the county’s timeline and recommended negotiating the document to allow use of a local title company and to extend the due‑diligence deadline to provide time for an updated survey and other customary checks.
Commissioner Riley moved to extend the due‑diligence period and authorized the county attorney "to make any changes that are needed" to compliance dates and to propose using a local title company; another commissioner seconded the motion. The chair said the attorney will prepare a revised contract and return to the commission for a formal approval vote next month.
The move is procedural: commissioners did not commit county funds beyond the previously approved tender and acknowledged they can still choose whether to proceed once due diligence is complete.
