The subcommittee chair told the Energy and Commerce oversight hearing that Congress directed the Federal Communications Commission to make more spectrum available, saying the Working Families Tax Code Act included direction for an 800-megahertz commercial spectrum auction.
"Making the spectrum available is essential to America's leadership in 5 g and 6 g," the chair said, and added the agency has already identified "at least a 100 megahertz for auction in the upper c band." He urged the FCC to coordinate with others and to be mindful of investments already made in existing commercial bands such as the 6 GHz band and the CBRS band.
The chair also described the Commission's agenda this month to expand unlicensed operations in the 6 GHz band as a "great great first step," framing unlicensed access as complementary to licensed auctions and broader efforts to accelerate broadband deployment.
No specific auction dates, reserve prices, or band plans were provided in the opening remarks; the chair's statements described statutory direction and ongoing agency activity.
