Sankofa Learning Academy told to seek City Council sponsorship for special‑use extension
Summary
Sankofa Learning Academy’s representative asked the commission for a 3–6 month extension to an earlier approved special use; planning staff told the applicant that time extensions are outside the commission’s jurisdiction and must be pursued with the city council.

Ayesha Green appeared before the Planning Commission on behalf of Sankofa Learning Academy to request a three‑ to six‑month extension for a previously approved special use at 1821 Edmonds Street. Green said the school’s startup was delayed by a roof leak and Department of Human Services requirements and asked for more time to get the building and licensing in order.
Planning staff (Miss Miller) told the applicant that the commission does not have authority to grant additional time for an ordinance that the city council already passed. "There has already been an approval of the special use and an ordinance has been passed, and therefore, anything related to getting additional time would need to go to the city council," Miss Miller said. The staff advised the applicant to seek a council sponsor or mayoral sponsorship to place an extension request before the council.
Because the extension request is outside the commission’s jurisdiction, the commission took no action on granting additional time and directed the applicant to work with planning staff and the appropriate council representative to pursue a council motion if desired.
What’s next: the applicant was told to contact Miss James and a council member or the mayor’s office to request formal sponsorship for an extension; a formal revocation process may be initiated by planning at a later date if compliance is not achieved.
