Thompson House repairs under way; HPC explores funding and administration for demonstration garden

Staff reported that the Board of Trustees approved a contract with Aspen Preservation Company to undertake necessary repairs to the Thompson House; staff said the low‑bid contractor planned to begin work weather permitting and expected to complete repairs in December if conditions allow. Staff provided an estimated annual cost to hire a contractor to perform the work — roughly $10,000–$12,000 per year — and commissioners discussed administration options. Several commissioners suggested Parks & Recreation could administrate the contract while HPC would retain a historical oversight role, and recommended engaging the Park & Rec Commission to gauge interest and potential funding. Staff noted calendar constraints and suggested a budget request for 2027 would be plausible given the current cycle. Commissioners also discussed whether to hire a third‑party contractor for weekly scope of work or to create a part‑time town position for coordination and interpretation duties.

Next steps identified were to present the proposal to the Park & Rec Commission, determine interest and potential cost‑sharing, and prepare a budget request (possibly for 2027) if Park & Rec or the trustees decide to pursue funded maintenance rather than volunteer support.
