Regional WeCycle update: 150,000+ rides since launch; town to pilot scan‑to‑unlock and site upgrades

WeCycle staff updated trustees on system performance and upcoming improvements, saying the regional bike‑share continues to show strong usage in Carbondale and the surrounding Roaring Fork Valley.
Myrta Mallory, WeCycle's executive director, framed the service as a community mobility resource launched in August 2023 and funded through a mix of partner investments. “Together, with your investment and that of Raftas and private partners, our collective vision was to build upon Carbondale's already existing and vibrant bike culture,” Myrta said.
System director Jack Dimmit presented utilization data and features under consideration. “Since our deployment in August 2023, we've surpassed over a 150,000 rides from 6,000 unique riders,” he said, adding that 99% of trips are under 30 minutes and therefore fare‑free. Dimmit told trustees WeCycle recorded roughly 60,000 trips in 2025 alone, with about 75% of those trips taken on ebikes.
WeCycle reported 18 stations and more than 100 bikes in the regional fleet, with over half the fleet electric. A regional heat map shows Carbondale's neighborhood stations performing well, and the park‑and‑ride and Carmel Marketplace stations rank among the busiest in the region. Dimmit noted peak ride times align with bus schedules, validating bike‑to‑bus first‑/last‑mile connections.
Planned improvements include hardware that increases dock capacity by roughly 50% within the same footprint, and new user features: staff said a scan‑to‑unlock function is expected in Carbondale in February to speed unlocking. WeCycle also highlighted bilingual safety outreach, a free helmet program, school and business engagement, and monitoring of student and youth passes; staff said about 130 youth passes have been issued locally this year and parental consent flows are used for minors under 18.
Trustees and staff discussed station placement near new teacher housing and the potential need to reassess capacity when housing comes online. WeCycle said daily operational constraints (rebalancing and staffing) factor into decisions about adding docks or stations. Trustees encouraged closer coordination between WeCycle and the Bike Ped Trails Commission on safety improvements and crossings.
WeCycle asked trustees for continued partnership on outreach and safety campaigns; trustees offered local channels and urged joint work with bike safety planners to ensure crossings and access keep pace with ridership.
