Marion County approves EMS director mentorship through KEMSA at about $2,000

Marion County commissioners unanimously approved on Jan. 26 the EMS director’s participation in a nine-month mentorship program run by the Kansas Emergency Medical Services Association (KEMSA). The program pairs new EMS directors with experienced mentors, includes a two-year KEMSA membership, face-to-face visits with a mentor, unlimited online and phone support, and a management workshop; the county estimated the cost at about $2,000.
County staff reported EMS handled about 290 calls in the past year and has improved staffing to minimum levels; the department is processing hires, including paramedics transferring credentials from other states. Commissioners said mentorship would help strengthen leadership and clinical oversight. "Do what we need to do to make sure that our EMS department is run effectively and efficiently," a commissioner said when moving the motion.
The commission voted to approve the enrollment and associated expense; staff will coordinate payment and program logistics.
