Fire staff described a Nov. 5 barn fire in the Springdale area during the council meeting on Nov. 13.
"We did have a fire here November 5 that night," said Tyler Ames, who told the council the blaze was reported by a nearby lodge and occurred on North Fork Road. Ames said the first unit arrived on scene in about five minutes and that crews from the local station, Laverkin and the main station in Herrick responded, alongside an ambulance crew.
Ames said the fire was a barn fire that became "fully involved" before crews controlled it; he identified the cause as a heat lamp inside the barn used for baby chickens. The barn was a complete loss and a nearby tractor sustained damage, Ames said. Crews returned the following day to cut away a collapsed metal roof and extinguish hot spots, with assistance from a construction crew that provided an excavator.
Council members asked about response times after hearing community concerns that some believed it had taken up to half an hour for responders to arrive; Ames confirmed the local crew was on scene in about five minutes and explained valley units could take longer to arrive. Ames said the responding unit that night was a crew of three.
