Federal Way committee to forward interlocal agreement to aid Renton during 2026 FIFA World Cup

Federal Way’s finance and economic development advisory committee voted Jan. 27 to forward an interlocal agreement that would send off‑duty Federal Way police officers to support security at a Renton hotel and practice facility hosting a 2026 FIFA World Cup national team.

Police Commander Jed Tan told the committee Renton requested assistance because it cannot staff the round‑the‑clock static security detail on its own. Tan said officers would work during their off duty or extra‑duty hours and that Renton would reimburse overtime expenses through grant funding. He added that Federal Way operational needs would be prioritized if a local watch party or other event required on‑site staffing.

Councilmembers asked whether officers would be deployed for crowd control or protests; Tan described the assignment as static security around the hotel parking and entrance rather than protest response. The committee moved and seconded the item and approved forwarding it to the Feb. 3 consent agenda by voice vote.

Next steps: the agreement will appear on the Feb. 3 consent agenda for final city council consideration, where the council can accept or modify terms including reimbursement language and any operational safeguards.
