The Sykesville Town Council unanimously approved a proposal Sept. 23 to repair the front porch of the historic Gatehouse Museum, authorizing Herman Restoration LLC to proceed on a contract not to exceed $60,000 and authorizing the mayor to sign necessary documents.
Town staff said Herman Restoration produced a scope of work that came in at about $53,000; staff recommended a $60,000 authorization to provide contingency for any hidden work discovered when renovating an older structure. Staff said the town will use a restricted gatehouse fund that currently has roughly $135,000 remaining.
Why it matters: The porch has been sagging and staff said the work is overdue. Council members asked whether Herman Restoration had bid on the earlier procurement and whether the work would resolve drainage issues; staff said the project should address porch structure and related drainage work but that additional basement or window work might be needed later.
Next steps: Staff will proceed with contract execution and coordinate necessary permitting and preservation compliance with the Maryland Historic Trust. The council asked staff to reach out to the donor family associated with the restricted fund to inform them the money will support the Gatehouse project.
