The Sykesville Town Council voted unanimously on Oct. 28 to approve a job description for a full‑time Parks and Recreation Coordinator, replacing the previously funded development coordinator role and authorizing staff to begin recruitment.
Town staff member Joe told the council the position would be a 40‑hour, salaried post focused on administrative support for the town's parks system and the Sykesville Parks and Recreation Commission (SPARC). Joe said the coordinator would handle event planning, maintain an asset and facility inventory and maintenance schedule, lead social media promotion, administer parks budgets and manage grants and projects. "Staff is recommending the parks and recreation coordinator position," Joe said.
Mayor (name not specified) said the role would improve coordination among police, public works and volunteers and described the hire as "a great example of how municipal government works." The mayor requested one verbal amendment to the proposed job description, asking staff to add wording on page two to make the parks asset inventory include "planting / shrubs, trees, etc." The mayor and staff confirmed that amendment would be incorporated in the final draft before recruitment begins.
Council members asked for clarification on the position's interaction with existing part‑time staff and public‑works operations. Joe said the new coordinator would not replace the part‑time summer splash‑pad staff but could obtain pool certification to fill in as needed and would coordinate directly with the police chief and public‑works director when issues arise. He added the coordinator would both apply for new parks grants and manage grants the town already identifies: "They would actually be the ones utilizing the grants that we've already identified and also looking for other revenue streams."
After discussion, the mayor called the motion to approve the job description as presented with the verbal amendment; the council approved by voice vote. The council also directed staff to begin the recruitment and hiring process.
Next steps: staff will prepare the final, amended job description and open recruitment for the position.
