Horry County Council honors wildfire responders; chief says more than 1,500 firefighters assisted

Horry County Council unanimously approved a resolution commending Horry County Fire Rescue, mutual-aid agencies and community partners for their response to the March 1 Carolina Forest wildland fire.

Chief Tanner, who spoke at the meeting, said the response involved state and federal partners and local departments: "Over 1,500 firefighters came to assist Horry County," and he reported the incident reached 100% containment and control after prolonged efforts. He said the firefighting effort stretched across many days and credited county departments for logistical support such as fueling, feeding and shelter for displaced residents.

Council members praised the coordinated effort. One member noted the prolonged commitment — "92 days that we were there every day" — and thanked public safety and law enforcement for evacuations and protecting structures. The resolution was presented amid applause and passed unanimously.

The resolution acknowledges mutual-aid contributions from multiple jurisdictions and recognizes the county's emergency operations coordination during the incident. Council did not specify funding or follow-up actions tied to the resolution during the meeting.
