Residents urge Horry County Council to preserve Socastee Recreation Park disc golf course

Ashley Cohen, a resident of District 7, told the Horry County Council during public comment that the county should preserve the 18‑hole disc golf course at Socastee Recreation Park rather than permanently remove it as part of park renovations. "I wanna say thank you ... for keeping Socastee Recreation Parks disc golf course alive and well and renovated and into the future," Cohen said, and urged that existing user groups be involved "not only from the beginning, but throughout the process" of design and engineering.

Matthew Robinson, who identified himself as a part‑owner of a disc‑golf retail business in Myrtle Beach, told council losing the Socastee course would be "a devastating blow to our disc golf community" and a setback for a local small business. Robinson said he and council members including Cam Crawford had worked toward "an amicable solution that provides an 18‑hole championship level disc golf course at Saugusty Park," and expressed gratitude to council members for their assistance.

Council members and staff were thanked repeatedly by both speakers for listening and engaging with the disc golf community; Parks and Recreation staff and a staff member named Ray were singled out for meetings and assistance. Council did not take a formal vote on the Socastee course during the public comment period; the remarks were recorded as input for future park planning.

The public comment segment closed without immediate council action; later in the agenda multiple land‑use ordinances were considered (see separate article). The meeting moved on after public input to approve the day's agenda and minutes and then to additional recognitions and zoning matters.
