Council authorizes planning to convey excess county land to Community Land Trust for workforce housing near VA nursing-facility parcel

Horry County Council on Sept. 23 approved a resolution that authorizes county staff to pursue planning and potential conveyance of excess county-owned land to the Horry County Community Land Trust (CLT) with the stated purpose of advancing workforce housing.
Speaker 8 briefed the council on the CLT's progress, noting the CLT has completed 501(c)(3) documentation and that the county previously authorized acquisition of 72.73 acres intended as the local match for a future VA nursing facility on Old Alton Road in Conway. Speaker 8 said the VA indicated interest in using unneeded but buildable portions of that parcel for residential development. "The resolution before you today would authorize the county administrator to request approval from the state to subdivide the excess property… and then the CLT would go in and master plan that area," Speaker 8 said.
Speaker 3 noted the location could provide a rural/residential setting compatible with the planned facility. The council approved the resolution by voice vote, authorizing staff to seek necessary state approvals and to pursue rezoning if needed to allow the CLT to develop an initial project.
The resolution ties this CLT effort to prior ARPA-funded acquisitions and to county housing and infrastructure set-asides previously approved by council.
