Board approves second readings of four policies; removes repetitious sentence on meeting time

The Spartanburg County School District 1 Board unanimously approved second readings of four policies — BE, BEA, GCLE and JLCG — and adopted an amendment to remove a repetitive sentence specifying a regularly scheduled meeting time in policy BE.

Dr. Clarence Brown, presenting the policy report, told the board that BEA had been revised to reflect state law on livestreaming and to say the district will publicize meetings on an "online digital platform" rather than naming a specific provider. "There's that little blue section there just revised to an online digital platform instead of tying us to one specific digital platform," Brown said.

Board members raised a drafting concern that the BE policy repeated the regularly scheduled meeting time in two sentences. A motion was made to approve the policies for second reading and was amended on the floor to remove the second sentence referencing the regular 7 p.m. meeting time; the amendment was seconded and both the amendment and the second-reading approvals passed unanimously.

Board discussion focused on clarity of language and the value of having a set regular meeting time while preserving flexibility to reschedule special meetings. The board will proceed with publication and subsequent steps required for policy adoption.
