During public comment on Nov. 19, Dawson Hair, vice president of Lodi Bob’s, told the City Council that the lighting project at Salus Park has been marred by vandalism and that ‘‘we've had over a $100,000 in vandalism’’ since construction began. He urged the council to direct a portion of the city’s parks fund toward repairing the damage and completing the lighting project so families and youth sports users can safely use the fields.
Councilmembers replied that staff reports indicate $110,000 of surplus funding has been allocated to the work and expressed support for completing the project. One councilmember noted the site runs along a Union Pacific right-of-way and asked staff to coordinate with the railroad on repairs and encampment issues near the line. Staff was asked to return with updates on communications with Union Pacific and any additional steps to protect and finish park improvements.
The council approved the consent calendar that included the funding action and asked staff to provide a report back on coordination with Union Pacific. No additional formal appropriation vote was taken beyond the consent action on the agenda.
