Several commissioners proposed prioritizing one to three actionable items for the year, establishing measurable goals and an annual status update, and organizing a retreat to foster cohesion among new and returning commissioners. Commissioner Wallace suggested aligning the commission's priorities with the Office of Arts and Culture's work plan and producing a brief preface letter from the commission chair to summarize priorities.
During the directors report, city staff announced a Stockton Boulevard Plan Action Grant: the city is dedicating $200,000, administered by the Neighborhood Development Action Team (NDAT) and the Office of Arts and Culture, to support community-led actions consistent with the Stockton Boulevard plan that include arts and culture activities.
Public speakers emphasized local needs: Shira Lane of Atrium 916 said Old Sacramento lacks spaces for local creatives and asked that Old Sacramento planning consider how to include and support local artists; Michael Lahood and Justina Martino described local studio space, exhibitions and artist-led programming and urged continued support for incubators and accelerators.
Next steps: Staff proposed forming a small working group (kept below quorum) to tighten language and return a draft for approval at the February meeting; commissioners were asked to submit suggested edits to staff within two weeks so the final version can be placed on the February agenda.
