Council approves land split at 406 South Weebick, confirms several board appointments

Clawson City Council voted Tuesday to approve a land-division request that splits 406 South Weebick into two compliant 50-foot-wide residential parcels, clearing the way for single-family construction.
Nick (city staff) explained the lot is currently 100 feet wide by 140 feet deep; the approved division will produce two 50-by-146-foot parcels that meet R-2 single-family district requirements. "The applicant is proposing the split in order to develop two single-family homes," staff said. Applicant David Gans of Winnick Homes told council the existing house will be removed and he expects to build three homes across the combined properties. "We've already contacted DTE and Consumers and getting disconnects, and we'll build 3 new homes," Gans said.
City staff and the consulting firm Giffels Webster reviewed zoning compliance and confirmed the proposed lots meet minimum lot-size and width standards. Staff noted single-family homes proceed via building-permit review rather than a planning-commission site-plan process.
The motion to approve the land division passed by roll call.
During the same meeting the council approved several appointments: Scott Manning and Jennifer Perkins to the compensation commission, filling unexpired terms, and Bonnie Swope to the Downtown Development Authority (term to Oct. 31, 2028). Resident Sean Nastry had urged support for Swope during public comment.
Council also adopted the city's 2026 schedule of public meetings as required by the Michigan Open Meetings Act and approved draft joint proclamation language recognizing a renewed relationship between Clawson Public Schools and the city; the proclamation will be adopted at a joint meeting on Jan. 12, 2026.
The council did not debate the land-division ordinance's consistency with neighborhood character at length; one councilor who inspected the site said the split "brings this lot into the character of that neighborhood closer."
