Council briefed on Gonzaga request to vacate Astor right-of-way; city to receive copy of 1993 agreement

City staff briefed the Spokane City Council on a request from Gonzaga University to vacate a section of public right-of-way on Astor, one block south of Sharp.
Eldon Brown described the proposed vacation as reducing the paved public right-of-way and leaving a 15-foot paved access to serve the nearby parish; the vacated portion would be converted to pedestrian and campus-oriented improvements. Brown said Gonzaga would be responsible for the closure work required to separate public utilities from private property. He noted the request lies within the bounds of a map and agreement from 1993 that the city and Gonzaga have followed for earlier campus-area vacations.
Brown said the university would request the vacation at no cost to Gonzaga for the property itself, but that Gonzaga would bear the costs of closure and related work. Staff offered to provide the council with copies of the 1993 agreement and the map. The matter was placed on upcoming committee/agenda consideration as Resolution 2026-0003 for formal action.
