Council briefed on landfill gas-control project; residents may smell brief emissions during spring work

Speaker 7 explained the work is an ongoing, phased maintenance program often scheduled in mid‑spring: “We usually do it in the mid early mid spring time period… maybe April, maybe early May,” and said the city sometimes needs to remove valves or perform other short interventions that “could” cause brief faint smells. He emphasized the work is targeted and not a mass excavation of every well at once.
Staff said notifications will be sent to surrounding cities before work begins and described two reasons for annual maintenance: regulatory requirements to maintain safe operation and to collect methane for the city’s RNG plan. Council did not take formal action but was told the project will come back as an item for approval when it is put out to bid.
