At the Nov. 13 meeting the board conducted a first reading of proposed revisions to Policy 9200, which would clarify the limits of trustee authority during school visits and propose that board members be accompanied by a principal or a designated administrator while on campus.
Several trustees warned the proposed language could discourage volunteers and PTA participation. "Yo creo que este lenguaje es restrictivo y esa es la intención," said one trustee during debate, while others argued the policy was intended to protect staff and avoid perceived conflicts of interest when trustees engage with school staff during visits.
Board members proposed targeted edits: removing the most restrictive first sentence in the draft first paragraph and rewording the accompaniment requirement so trustees could still volunteer if registered and coordinated with the principal. The committee will refine the language and return the policy for further review; because this was a first reading, no final action was taken.
Trustees emphasized the distinction between acting as a community volunteer and acting in their official capacity as a board member. Staff and trustees agreed to provide clarifying edits and to reconvene the committee to produce a revised draft that protects staff while allowing meaningful parent and community volunteer participation.
