Westchester BOCES outlines superintendent search timeline; board to interview candidates in February

Dr. Howard Coles of Westchester BOCES told the board the search began with 31 candidates, two withdrew leaving 29, and a vetting process narrowed the pool to 12 candidates who were interviewed between Jan. 6 and Jan. 16. Coles said the board will conduct first-round interviews in February and expected a finalist to be selected for contract negotiations with a planned start date of July 1, 2026.
"We wound up narrowing that down to 12 candidates, which we wound up interviewing starting January 6," Coles said, and described the process of moving finalists into board interviews. Coles said the timeline allows time for notice to a candidate who is currently employed so they can transition into the role by the start of the next school year.
A board member expressed concern about timing but Coles and staff said the multi-stage interview schedule (first and second rounds planned for February) was on track to meet the July start target.
No hiring decision was made at the meeting; the matter will continue through executive session and subsequent board interviews per the announced timeline.
